1960 Biscayne to Bel Air
Norman Sims, GA
This 1960 Biscayne has been re-badged as a Bel Air. The car was purchased in the Chicago area by Daryl Brewer in 2001. The previous owner had just finished the paint and body work. The interior was trashed, the engine compartment was a disaster and the suspension also needed help.
Daryl spent the next six years building the car. He is a certified ASE mechanic and does his own work. Daryl completed the renovation of the car in 2006 and I bought the car from him in March, 2008 over the Internet. From 2006 to date the car has won many awards and has been driven approximately 5,600 miles.
The 283 is bored .060”, has Keith Black domed pistons, 76cc World Product 305 torquer heads, a Comp cam with 460 degree duration, an Edelbrock 600cfm electric choke carb with EPS Performer intake and Endurashine coating. It is fired by a Mallory HEI distributor, cooled with a polished High Flow water pump and aluminum radiator with dual 12” fans. The valve covers and accessory brackets are from Billet Specialty. The accessories include a polished Holley fuel pump, alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump and it has ceramic-coated headers.
The transmission is a Muncie 4-speed with new clutch kit and Hurst shifter, completely checked with new seals added. The rear end is a 3.55 open differential with new axle bearings, new pinion bearings and new seals. The front and rear suspension have been completely rebuilt with 2” drop spindles, front disc brakes and lowering springs all around. The rear drum brakes received all new components. Power brakes were added with new stainless steel lines and power steering.
The wheels are American Racing Hopsters, 18”x 8' front and 18” x 10” rear, with Toyo 245/45R18 and 285/40R18 tires. Front and rear anti-sway bars were added to improve ride and handling. A new gas tank and fuel lines were installed.
The interior has a new headliner, seat foam and upholstery, carpet, door panels and handles. New Auto Meter Old Time gauges were added with a custom molded steering column tach. Other interior additions were Vintage Air/Heat with custom vents, seat belts, Impala steering wheel and Custom Auto Sound with tape and CD player. The entire car was rewired and has a 2-1/2” Flowmaster exhaust system.
My '60 has won several awards, such as the 2006 Chevy Vette Fest Gold Boulevard Gold winner, 2007 Super Chevy Editor's Choice and Best In Class. In 2007 it was driven 1200 miles on the Hot Rod Power Tour. Most recently, February 2008, the car received a Silver Certificate and 947 out of 1000 judging points and 1st in class at the CCC Winter National in Kissimmee, FL.
Although I didn’t build this car, that fact sure doesn’t take anything away from the fun it is to drive!
