1955-57 TREMEC 5-Speed Transmission Installation-Updated
Article By Randy Irwin
Time Frame: 5 Hours
The Tremec TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission has become one of the most popular conversions for many early model GM cars. If you already have a 4-speed transmission in your car, it’s just about a bolt-in change. When the Tremec is in 5th gear, there is a 36% reduction in engine rpm compared to a 3 or 4-speed which has a 1 to 1 ratio in high gear. The Tremec TKO 5-speed has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the Saginaw and Muncie transmissions so the original GM cast iron or aluminum bell housing can be used. The top-loader design of the Tremec gives superior positive shifts with no linkage to bind or get out of adjustment. It can be used behind your docile street engine or with your 700 HP mountain motor. The TKO is truly a high performance transmission!
